Go For It Right Now

I venture to guess that in today’s world, less than 10% of human beings are actively employed in or retired from a profession even remotely related to their own God-given talents, abilities, and desires. No, make that 5%. You get the idea. Few people truly dream of self-improvement. Few actually “Go for it.”

A little something called “everyday life” seemingly requires that we all be practical and take convenient jobs, as opposed to betting on ourselves in dreams and heartfelt opportunities. We must be sensible and responsible adults, right? Talent becomes secondary.

Thousands of potentially good writers have spent scores of years working amid dreary plants and factories. Numerous painters and “would-be artists” with promise hold down desks at governmental offices or corporate facilities. Millions of retirees daydream about “what might have been” if only they’d taken a chance, trusted the Lord, or given themselves one year to “make it” writing children’s books, taking photographs, acting in the theatre, or possibly something else all together.

There is the idea of a personal ministry… How about helping others? Serving at the shelter? Cooking? Reading to children? Performing neighborhood chores? Did you ever have time in the past?

Regrets abound, and are nothing whatsoever to be ashamed of. Still, right or wrong, second-guessing past moves and decisions serves little purpose, unless…

Yes, “unless.” Unless you change and do not repeat the same regrets on into the future. Today is tomorrow’s yesterday, and next year’s “anniversary of.” Make something of it! Explore your natural talent.

Often, middle-aged and aging Americans have more time and freedom to practice various loves, passions, and hobbies today than they ever did in days gone by. The truth is, countless new careers and satisfying pastimes now begin after age 50… Many after 70… Some at 80 plus…

So, what does this mean, and what am I saying to you? Three simple words: GO FOR IT!

There is a corny cliche’ that says, “It’s never too late.” Guess what? There is some truth to it. Talent often remains, laying dormant.

Think of life in terms of a writer. You may not have enough years to accumulate a body of work to win the Nobel Prize, but a Pulitzer aint bad either! It could be done. It has been done. Yes, it can still be done.

The same is true for almost any field of endeavor. Get it? It’s quality, not quantity, and with a bit more maturity now, your efforts will be more efficient. GO FOR IT!

What do you have to lose? Nothing. You rarely participated, or stopped anyway. That is your regret.

Contrarily, what do you have to gain? The dreams of your youth, self-respect, the overcoming of past regrets, and a renewed sense of value in an increasingly de-humanized world, that’s what.

Say a prayer and, with God’s help, embark upon a new life, one that might reward yourself in ways you hadn’t considered. You might find that your family and friends also enjoy seeing that certain fresh spark of life in your eyes. Again, as C. H. Spurgeon might have said: GO FOR IT! Years from now, take no regrets with you to Heaven… AMEN.
